Going Batty

Hello all! I've been thinking of posting all week, but we've just been swamped with stuff to do. Combine that with my brain not working (pregnesia hit 2 weeks ago), and the whole blogging thing just hasn't happened. We did have a little excitement this week, and not of the good variety. (Nothing's terribly wrong, just read on...)

On Tuesday, Cline, Christa, Cline's brother, Cleve, and I went to lunch at a great downtown restaurant. As usual, Christa didn't eat a whole lot and was finished eating before the rest of us. Cline decided to take her walking down the sidewalk outside, while Cleve and I finished and paid for the meal.

As they were walking, they noticed a dead bird on the sidewalk. Christa, of course, wanted to touch it, and Cline quickly steered her in another direction. She started to walk toward a store front, and Cline must have briefly looked away, because the next thing he knew Christa was screaming and running towards him. He looked over to where she was, and there was a live bat lying on its back, making whatever noises bats make.

We do not think Christa was bitten, or even touched it, but the whole thing happened so fast and caught Cline by such surprise that we can't be sure. Who would expect a bat to be laying in a store front in the middle of the day??? The problem with this situation is that bats are the number 1 carriers of Rabies (one laying on the ground in the middle of the day is especially suspicious), and their bites are so minor and small that Christa very well could have been bitten or come into contact with the bat's saliva with no evidence for us to see. Since rabies is 100% fatal, she's getting vaccines for the next 28 days. No fun, but at least she's OK.

Cline's been beating himself up for not killing the bat right then. He called animal control and came back into the restaurant to tell me about it, and by the time he got back there, the bat was gone. If we'd gotten the bat, we could have had it autopsied, and if rabies could have been ruled out, Christa would have been spared these extra shots. I'm glad he was the one with her, because I did not know all of this information about bat exposure, and wouldn't have thought anything of the situation. Christa said "big bat" for about 30 minutes after the incident :) She's a trooper, though, and will be getting coke and cookies with each shot!

I am off to have some prayer time, something I've neglected lately, and it's taking it's toll. I just can't seem to get my act together! I have some pictures to post soon - we got to visit baby Jesse last weekend, so I'll get that posted soon.

Have a great day!

Oh, poor Christa! All those shots are just horrible. I am glad though that she is handling it the best she can. Please keep us posted on how she is doing. Take care.

Oh my! I am glad she is okay. Those shots don't sound like fun, but I am glad she is getting the care she needs just in case. Hang in there, sweet baby!
