Happy Mother's Day

Hello all! Let me give a shout-out to all the mommies, soon-to-be-mommies, and all women who will one day be mommies. I also have a shout-out for the mothers out there whose kids are grown, but who still have very important, motherly roles that they fill daily. I am blessed to call two such women mother and mother-in-law, and I couldn't ask for a better one of either!

We are having a nice Mothers Day around here. My own mother decided to leave town for the week, so Christa and I spent the morning with my mother-in-law and 20 other extended family members. Our lunch experience was chaotic to say the least! (But delicious, nonetheless). Cline is working today, but got me a much appreciated house cleaning several weeks ago and what I am sure will be 2 very sweet cards to be opened later.

With all that said, I'm going to make use of the rainy day, put on some laundry, and enjoy what I hope will be a nice, long nap. Oh, and by the way, I think I'm wearing Cline down on releasing the baby's name, so hopefully in the next day or two, I'll be asking your advice on nicknames!

Happy Mother's Day girlie...
I voted but you can't comment so here's my thinking.
If you are going to do Abby Kate then why not Abigail... If the point of a nickname is to shorten a name... Then Abby Kate is not any shorter... Just my 2 cents cause you asked...

Then there's the whole knowing your "real" name in school bit.... I could tell you more but since my child uses his intials for a name, it might sound hypocritical...

I like the sound of Abby, it's cute. Your cousin Wes Williams has an Abigail, and calls her Abby. If you love the name Abigail so much, why need a nickname? Of course, all my kids have nicknames, even Chris (and you can't get much shorter than that!) Randy came up with all the nicknames as the kids got older. Chris was Keem (short for keemosobi, who was a sidekick to the lone ranger back in the 50's) Dacia became Shickypu(had it on a car tag until she hit a deer last year), Justin is Scoop (still uses that name, most people don't know his name is Justin) and Zachary is Tige. A nickname to us is about affection; not so much about shortening their given name.

LOVE the name! I am the "odd ball" that voted for Abby Kate. I think that is so adorable! Happy deciding!

Hey, we'll see you SO soon! Can't wait to hit the beach with you!

Perhaps you should give "Abigail" as a choice in the voting and see what happens. Unless you are definitely opposed to calling her by that name. I voted for Abby but I like Abby Kate too - it's more southern. You are always free to change your mind about the whole thing until it's on the birth certificate.

I agree with most of the comments. On the birth certificate, I'd go with Abigail (first name) Kathleen (second name). No need to confuse things and easier for everyone to know what goes on the school-roster, diploma, etc. (thinking ahead - I know...). But in terms of true nicknames, you can try everything under the sun. I know I've gone through about 20 nicknames apiece for my siblings, but nothing they would want on a formal certificate. :-) Based on the comments, I'm not sure everyone read the original post the same way. But I think this sums it up ok.

I agree with the above...
I thought I was voting on her called name... like if you were the 3rd, you might be called Trey, or if your given name was Christopher, but you were called Chris... I think a fun nickname (like Bubba, or Bug, or Sunshine)comes later when their personalities and likes are clearer!

I do think you need to pick whats most natural to you and Cline... Both of you try it out in all situations.
Like Christa, Abby (Kate), let's go...
Abby (Kate) quit bothering
Christa...
Christa, Abby (Kate), dinner...

I think that you may find the shorter version comes easier...
I know in the classroom it does...
As the list of kids names gets longer the names get shorter....

The birth certificate will definitely say "Abigail," but I don't think we'll call her that. It's a beautiful name, but I just like Abby or Abby Kate so much, that I can't resist going with one of those two! It's so funny most of you are choosing "Abby" because most of the people I've talked to in person say they like "Abby Kate" better. I still can't decide which one I prefer (although Cline is partial to your choice so far :) Christa says "Abby" very clearly, and when we tried to add the "Kate" today, she said "Abby cake." It was pretty cute!

Well I didn't know "Abby Cake" was a choice...
Can I change my vote????

Jessica: I have my own Abigail so I am excited you are naming her Abigail. I think its pretty funny that Christa and Gracie have the same birthday and now Gracie and this new little girl will have the same first name!! : )

We loved Abigail Grace and had decided to either call her Abby or Gracie for short. We waited until we saw her sweet face for the first time before we decided what we wanted to call her. To us she was a Gracie. So don't rush it. You may be surprised what you decide once she is here and you see her face.

I've been given a hard time because we call Gracie something else beside her real name. Most of them are teachers. They tell me it makes it harder on kids in school b/c all their records will show Abigail Grace. They said if we loved Gracie so much we should have called her that instead. But we loved the traditional names. But we didn't care. I don't think its as bad and hard as people say it is. You just tell people up front what you want them called. And she is quick to tell people its Gracie.

With Elizabeth it was a little different. I loved Elizabeth Rose, but we knew we'd either call her Elizabeth or Lizzy. I still alternate between the two, even though most days its Lizzy.

I love Abby (we almost called Gracie that). But I love Abby Kate too. It's a hard choice. I almost like the idea of her actual name being Abby Kate. I think its neat and unique for the most part : )

Whatever you decide, everyone will love and teachers will accept later on. And if you want to start with Abigail, people are right, it will get shortened eventually by classmates.

Good luck! Let's do dinner again soon!

Ok, well you know my stance on nicknames (hence my daughter is still called CATHERINE and nothing shorter). However, I think if you aren't going to call her Abigail, I definitely like Abby Kate. I know everyone worries about school and teachers and what's on paper and what not, but take it from a Kimberly who hates Kim and always wanted to be called Kimberly, yet all my teachers seemed to shorten it- despite what was on the class roll!!!
